A pictorial point in time
More than a decade ago in a city, far, far away (all right some slight exaggeration there – it was Birmingham) and following a team building event of some sort; my colleagues and I decided to brighten up the office we worked in with some collages that gave other team members and visitors to the office some insights into our interests. The aim was to have some fun, be creative and provoke some dialogue that would help us all understand each other better and increase no end the productivity in the office (naïve, maybe a little, but harmless too).
In a marketing department, you’d expect the members to be wildly creative but you’d be surprised how many failed to deliver against their objective – although of course maybe you wouldn’t! To be fair though, this kind of thing was harder for the more introverted and private characters!
For those that delivered, their collages were put up on the wall along the back of the marketing department. They stayed on the wall for a long time too at least until they had been up for long enough to have become invisible and team member changes took their toll.
Given that the whole thing was my idea in the first place, I got my act together and all these years later, and as a result of decorating my daughter’s bedroom, I am writing about this A3 piece of creative soul searching. Why? Well my collage fell out of my daughter’s wardrobe and landed at my feet – the glass was cracked but aside from that the years had not been unkind. Here it is for you to see.
The thing that I find most fascinating is that much of what you now see before you is every bit as appropriate now as it was then. Either I had great insight at the time or I have been remarkably consistent, or of course remarkably dull!
I think/communicate in words first, pictures next and numbers last. You have read the words, you have seen the pictures and as for the
numbers, well - the 70s was my ‘thing’ even in the nineties.
Nice things to note:
The grey kitten pictured middle left is still with me although the old girl is nearing 14 now.
The lovely lady pictured with the head of Les Patterson is my wife of more than ten years.
Iron Maiden – the band is still rocking.
