Reading George Smith's "Up Smith Creek" reminded me of another journalist whose weekly outpourings (over years) in Marketing Week magazine used to grab and then hold my attention. That gentleman’s name – Iain Murray!
Murray, like Smith, evidenced a deep understanding of our wonderful language and wrote with a wit and humour that was enthralling and thoroughly entertaining.
Here’s what Drayton Bird had to say in his own eloquent way when Murray stopped contributing to Marketing Week in April 2009.
“Iain Murray, hilariously exposed the follies of the marketing industry, treating it with the contempt so many practitioners so richly deserve.
Compared to the tedious literary ullage that composed the rest of the magazine he shone out like a good deed in a naughty world. He was, by far, the only thing worth reading in its pages.
I never held a candle to him. Week after week, I would read his stuff and chortle happily.
Now, I hear, they have fired him. Lunatics.”
Unfortunately I have yet to locate a book containing the marketing related written works of Iain Murray (Ken, maybe a new project for you and White Lion Press here) but I remain alert and hopeful!
There is no need to fret though; thankfully, Murray’s work (from late 2006 to 2009) can still be accessed via the Marketing Week website (you’ll need to use the site search functionality and type in his name).
