Martha Payne and the ”Streisand Effect” - 21/06/12

Argyll and Bute Council's decision to clamp down on something that was essentially harmless was proved to be a stupid corporate decision and social media was the perfect vehicle to expose it. I wasn’t familiar with the term the “Streisand Effect” but this story was perfect evidence of an effort to suppress something and instead of reducing coverage, it growing out of all proportion, and quickly too. Martha’s story will become a marketing case study in the power of social media and justifiably so.
For all individuals, like me, that tinker around with their own websites or administer their own blog; Martha Payne, a young student in Scotland, should be an inspiration. Her site purpose is clear and simple, her aims are altruistic and her site is fun.
When faced with overwhelming challenge, she gently pushed back and utilised social media to support her. The value of social media is that the support is instantaneous and obvious. Having Jamie Oliver re-tweet her position to his 2.3 million followers just proves that the days of the paper/clipboard based protest are behind us.
Martha’s fundraising efforts are to be loudly applauded and I think that this is where Argyll and Bute Council, perhaps bizarrely, can be congratulated for making the fuss it did. Its negativity generated another £28,000 for Mary’s Meals in just three days. So this social media story ends up being fairy-tale delightful – some genuine good came from it.
