Nov. 2011 The Hamsters Final Tour
On Saturday 19th November 2011 I went to see The Hamsters at a gig at the Citadel Arts Centre in St Helens. The band plays rhythm and blues and covers a number of tunes by such musical luminaries as Jimi Hendrix and ZZ Top. The guys have been touring the country constantly for some 25 years now and are getting ready to retire; so if you have never heard of the band or been to a gig, you’d better get on with it quick or miss out altogether (believe me, that would be a shame).
I went to the gig with a mate of mine and we had a great evening. We reminisced upon the fact that we first saw The Hamsters as long ago as 1987/8 and that made us both feel old, although not as old as the band I hasten to add, or so close to retirement age.
Is there anybody out there that remembers the Buffalo Rock Club in Baldock? This seminal rock venue was the first place I ever saw The Hamsters and indeed one of my other favourite bands The Bleach Boys. The rock club is long gone now and with it one of my teenage reference points.
I have seen The Hamsters a number of times over the last few decades (as had many at the gig) and own all of the CD output too. As the band has aged so have I and it would appear so had the majority of the audience too. There’s a time and a place for moshing and this wasn’t it, instead dancing was limited to something more akin to routed swaying/gyrating. No injuries here or wasteful spillages of beer.
A great gig though, with front man Slim delivering humorous stories, lines and anecdotes in between note perfect singing and guitar playing. After the gig the guys came into the bar and spent time talking to their fans, signing autographs, having their pictures taken and proving that they are genuinely nice characters too.
The final tour ends in March so get your tickets while you still can.
