As in previous years (I am getting old), I have struggled a little to get into the festive spirit, though the Christmas jumpers and lunch outings have helped. Now that all the presents are bought, the cards are sent, the trees are up, the presents are wrapped and the time away from the office is drawing close, I am easing into the yuletide “zone”.
I drove to work this morning listening to a Christmas CD and reflected that music is one of the most fundamental parts of building my sense of occasion. But this won’t surprise regular readers because every few years, I write a Christmas tunes inspired post; earlier efforts available below.
This year I have two new recommendations to share for albums that have really worked for me.
The first up is “Twisted Christmas” by Twisted Sister. This 11 track CD, containing a selection of well-known Christmas tunes with a heavy metal twist, is great fun and, if you’re a rocker, you’re going to love it.
- "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
- "Oh Come All Ye Faithful"
- "White Christmas"
- "I'll Be Home for Christmas"
- "Silver Bells"
- "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"
- " Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow"
- "Deck the Halls"
- "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)"
- "Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas)"
- ""We Wish You a Twisted Christmas" (hidden track)
The second top pick is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Christmas Time Again”. Another eleven-track festive rock sizzler.
- "Santa's Messin' with the Kid"
- "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"
- "Christmas Time Again"
- "Greensleeves"
- "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"
- "Run Run Rudolph"
- "Mama's Song"
- "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin”
- "Classical Christmas"
- "Hallelujah, It's Christmas"
- "Skynyrd Family"
Christmas pop is good fun but Christmas rock is better. If you fancy a break from Wham and Frankie goes to fucking Hollywood, then look either of these albums up.
I am going to my final gig of the year on Saturday night, hopefully the Bleach Boys will perform “White Christmas” and that’ll be me all set for a period of indulgence, excess, fun and family.
I hope that you have a lovely time over the festive break surrounded by those that you love.
Best wishes,
Adrian
