AACI Late Summer Open Nationals 2017

PictureAACI Later Summer Open Nationals 2017
On Sunday 6th August, I attended the American Automobile Club International (AACI) Late Summer Nationals at Kelmarsh Hall, near Market Harborough. On this occasion, I took my Canadian next door neighbour, Pete, with me to enjoy the show.

I am toying with the idea that taking a citizen from the continent of North America partially offsets turning up in a German car and not being an AACI member.

The weather was okay on Sunday, which was a good result bearing in mind that it had been dreadful on Saturday.

Since the June event, the organisers had made some changes to the format, the most obvious was the establishment of zones for certain makes/models of car. The Corvettes had a section as did the Trans Ams.

The most visible difference to the non-vehicle environment was the creation of a Wild West corner. In this space the residents wore Stetsons, carried guns and drawled to each other whilst sat outside their cloth or timber refuges. If I’d stayed later into the afternoon, I’d have been able to watch the gunslingers shooting at each other (with blanks obviously).

I was advised that the shoot-em-up was quite good fun and surprisingly noisy. This was relayed to me by Brendan McCarth, the event organiser to whom I had introduced myself (having been invited to after my blog post from the June event). Apparently the reenactors had performed on the Saturday afternoon and made enough noise to bother/worry the guests of a wedding party at the Hall.

The non-car excitement on Sunday also included an impromptu glider landing in the field just the other side of the show area. The challenge for the embarrassed pilot was how on earth to get his glider back. His buddies flew on and left him to wait for a recovery truck and trailer.

But back to the cars, there were reportedly fewer vehicles on show than in June (maybe that was weather related) but not enough to be too obvious as far as I was concerned. Pete and I spent a happy few hours mooching about and taking photos – in my case about 230 of them. For your enjoyment a selection of shots is shared below.

My thanks go to Brendan and his crew for organising another good event and I’ll look forward to doing it all again next year.
