Upsetting news today about the death of George Cole; another of my seventies (and onwards) TV favourites is gone. Aged 90, he had a good innings but I bet there won’t be anyone in my generation that is not a little sad that the legendary, decidedly crooked Arthur Daley didn’t manage to negotiate a little more out of, or even pull a fast one over - the grim reaper.
Unlike detective sergeants Chisholm or Rycott, who couldn’t make their charges stick, the reaper managed to nail his man, eventually.
Minder (the series in which Cole portrayed Arthur Daley) was top television in my youth and for us Brits, the theme tune is as instantly recognisable as the national anthem.
Terry McCann (played by Dennis Watermann, who incidentally sang the famous theme tune mentioned above) and Arthur Daley were a double-act every bit as entertaining as Regan & Carter, Bodie & Doyle, Starsky & Hutch, Dempsey & Makepeace, Del Boy & Rodney, and even Morecambe & Wise.
Regular readers will know that I like old cars, well I can’t look at an eighties Jaguar XJ6 without thinking of Arthur Daley. If I was organising Cole’s send off, I’d be making sure that he was carried to his resting place in one.
